Most affordable African country to visit from Lagos.

Where your naira genuinely stretches furthest in 2026 — ranked by actual trip cost, not just hotel rates on Booking.com.

Everyone has an opinion about which African country is "cheap." Instagram will tell you Kenya is affordable, then you look at the flight and realise Air Peace isn't flying there yet. Google says Morocco is a steal, then you realise you need to transit through Casablanca and that doubles the cost. The real "cheap" is the trip you can complete end-to-end for the smallest reasonable total — flights, visa, hotel, food, transport — not the trip with the cheapest hotel.

Here's the real ranking, based on what we've actually spent putting Nigerian travellers through these destinations in 2026.

#1 Benin Republic — the overall winner

WhatRough cost
Round-trip transport from Lagos (bus)₦30,000–₦60,000
Visa₦0 (ECOWAS, none needed)
Hotel (4 nights, 3★+)₦120,000–₦250,000
Food (per day)₦8,000–₦15,000
Realistic total, 5 days₦250,000–₦400,000

Benin Republic wins because it eliminates the two most expensive line items on any African trip: flights and visas. You cross the border by road at Seme, which takes 4–6 hours including customs, and you're in Cotonou or Ouidah on the same day you left Lagos. ECOWAS passports don't need a visa.

What you give up: a sense of being far from home. Cotonou feels like a quieter Nigerian city, which is lovely if you want to decompress and brutal if you were looking for culture shock. Ouidah, 40 minutes south of Cotonou, has the beach resorts, the history (Door of No Return, Python Temple), and the vibe that actually feels like a holiday.

#2 Togo

Essentially the same economic story as Benin — ECOWAS, no visa, you can get there by road from Lagos (longer, but doable) or fly to Lomé for about ₦350,000 round-trip. Hotels in Lomé are cheaper than Cotonou, around ₦15,000–₦25,000 per night for a decent 3★.

Why we don't push it harder: it's a slightly thinner tourist offering than Benin. Lomé beach is pleasant, the city is walkable, but there's less to actually do over a 5-day trip. Best for a 3-day weekend.

#3 Ghana

WhatRough cost
Flight Lagos → Accra round-trip₦450,000–₦700,000
Visa₦0 (ECOWAS)
Hotel (5 nights, 3★)₦200,000–₦400,000
Food & transport (per day)₦15,000–₦30,000
Realistic total, 5 days₦800,000–₦1.3m

Ghana is the sweet spot for first-time flyers who want a real international trip. Flights are short, visa is nothing, and Accra has grown into a legitimate destination city — Osu, Jamestown, Labadi Beach, and the increasingly good food scene. For December's Afrochella and Beyond The Return season, prices spike 2–3× — book for January–March if budget matters more than parties.

#4 Rwanda — best value for an international flight

WhatRough cost
Flight Lagos → Kigali (RwandAir, direct)₦750,000–₦1.1m
Visa on arrival$50 (~₦80,000)
Hotel (5 nights, 4★)₦400,000–₦700,000
Food & transport (per day)₦18,000–₦35,000
Realistic total, 5 days₦1.5m–₦2.3m

Rwanda is probably the best value proposition in all of East Africa for Nigerian travellers in 2026. RwandAir has a direct Lagos–Kigali route (no painful Addis layover), visa is on arrival, Kigali is clean and safe to walk around, and the land of a thousand hills delivers on its name. Where Rwanda surprises is the quality level — the hotels run 4★ for roughly what you'd pay for 3★ anywhere else in East Africa.

We've done this

Our September 2026 Kigali edition came in at ₦2.1m per person including everything — flights, 4★ hotel, breakfast, airport transfers, city tour, countryside drives. If you're planning solo, add about 15–20% because you're not getting group rates.

#5 Kenya — more expensive but packs more in

WhatRough cost
Flight Lagos → Nairobi₦900,000–₦1.4m
eTA$30 (~₦48,000)
Hotel (5 nights, 4★)₦400,000–₦800,000
Food, transport, excursions (per day)₦30,000–₦60,000
Realistic total, 6 days₦2.5m–₦3.5m

Kenya is a step up in price — Nairobi airport taxes are high, excursions (safari drives, Giraffe Centre, Elephant Orphanage) cost real money, and getting around Nairobi isn't cheap. But you also get a step up in experience: the Masai Mara on a day trip from Nairobi, Lake Naivasha, Carnivore Restaurant, the Museum of Illusions, zip-lining at Kereita Forest.

Our October 2026 Blissful Nairobi trip ran at ₦2.66m per person sharing — that's the group rate. Solo adds roughly ₦400,000.

The verdict

If you have under ₦500,000: Benin Republic. 5 days, no visa, no flight, actual holiday.

If you have ₦1–1.5m: Ghana. Real international experience, cheap flights, no visa, pick anywhere but December if budget matters.

If you have ₦2–2.5m: Rwanda. The best quality per naira in East Africa right now, especially if you go with us on a group edition.

If you have ₦2.5m+: Kenya. The experience is denser and the memories are bigger. Worth the extra naira if you want "I went on safari" energy, not just "I went abroad."
