The honest answer to the question we get on WhatsApp every single day: "which country can I just go to with my green passport?"
The Nigerian passport is often ranked around 92nd–96th in the world for visa-free access, which sounds grim until you realise it still gets you into roughly 40 countries without a pre-arranged visa — a mix of visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and e-visa destinations where the paperwork is faster than you've been told. If you're reading this because you want to travel this quarter without a six-week embassy saga, these are the realistic options.
In this guide
1. Visa-free: just show up
You land, you present the passport, you get a stamp. No fee, no form, no advance paperwork. This is the gold standard.
| Country | How long you can stay | |
|---|---|---|
| 🇧🇯 | Benin Republic | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇹🇬 | Togo | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇬🇭 | Ghana | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇸🇳 | Senegal | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇨🇮 | Côte d'Ivoire | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇬🇲 | The Gambia | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇧🇫 | Burkina Faso | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇸🇱 | Sierra Leone | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇱🇷 | Liberia | 90 days (ECOWAS) |
| 🇬🇳 | Guinea | 90 days |
| 🇧🇸 | Bahamas | 90 days |
| 🇧🇧 | Barbados | 90 days |
| 🇭🇹 | Haiti | 90 days |
| 🇻🇺 | Vanuatu | 30 days |
| 🇫🇯 | Fiji | 120 days |
Twelve of these are ECOWAS neighbours. For most Nigerians, "visa-free travel" has historically meant West Africa, and that's still the easiest route to collect a passport stamp this weekend. Benin Republic specifically — the border crossing at Seme is routine, and you're on the beach in Ouidah by evening.
2. Visa-on-arrival: land, pay, enter
You arrive without any prior approval. You pay a fee at the airport counter (bring USD cash — most won't accept naira or cards). Within an hour, you have your visa stamped and you're in the country. These are the gold mine for Nigerian travellers because the embassy wait disappears entirely.
| Country | Fee (USD) | Stay | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇰🇪 | Kenya (eTA now, functionally same) | $30 | 90 days |
| 🇷🇼 | Rwanda | $50 | 30 days |
| 🇲🇺 | Mauritius | Free | 60 days |
| 🇸🇨 | Seychelles | Free (visitor permit) | 90 days |
| 🇲🇬 | Madagascar | $35 | 30 days |
| 🇪🇹 | Ethiopia | $52 (e-visa option too) | 30 days |
| 🇰🇲 | Comoros | $30 | 45 days |
| 🇲🇿 | Mozambique | $50 | 30 days |
| 🇨🇻 | Cape Verde | €25 EASE fee | 30 days |
| 🇹🇿 | Tanzania (incl. Zanzibar) | $50 | 90 days |
| 🇺🇬 | Uganda (via e-visa, usually <72hrs) | $50 | 90 days |
| 🇸🇴 | Somalia | $60 | 30 days |
Visa-on-arrival fees almost always need to be paid in USD cash, in clean bills (no tears, no marker, series 2013 or newer). Naira won't be accepted. ATMs at some airports are unreliable, so arrive with the exact fee plus a $10-$20 buffer.
3. E-visa: apply online, approved before you fly
You fill a form on a government website, upload a passport scan and photo, pay the fee by card, and get an approval email anywhere from 24 hours to 2 weeks later. You print it and travel. No embassy visit.
| Country | Typical turnaround | Fee | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇦🇪 | UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) via airline sponsor | 3–5 business days | ~$120 |
| 🇶🇦 | Qatar (ETA for approved travellers) | Instant to 48hrs | Free–$30 |
| 🇪🇬 | Egypt (e-visa or VOA) | 5–7 days | $25 |
| 🇹🇷 | Turkey (via tour operator or e-visa for approved) | Varies | Varies |
| 🇮🇳 | India (e-visa) | 3–5 days | $40 |
| 🇱🇰 | Sri Lanka ETA | 24hrs | $50 |
| 🇰🇭 | Cambodia e-visa | 3 days | $36 |
| 🇦🇿 | Azerbaijan ASAN visa | 3 days | $25 |
4. ETAs — the sneaky new category
Several countries (Kenya and the UK being the headliners) have replaced their visa process with an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Technically it's not a visa — but you still need to apply online before boarding, provide biometrics in some cases, and pay a small fee. For Nigerians, the Kenya ETA is painless; the UK ETA is new and the rules are still shifting, so check the gov.uk site directly before booking.
5. Real talk on the ones everyone asks about
Dubai
Not visa-free. You need a sponsored tourist visa, usually arranged through Emirates/Etihad or a Dubai-based tour operator. We handle this for every trip we run to the UAE. Approval rate for travellers with a decent travel history is high; approval rate for first-time Nigerian passport holders with no prior stamps is unpredictable.
Schengen (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.)
Painful. 15+ document checklist, in-person embassy appointment, 2–6 week wait, €90 fee, and a very real rejection rate. We wrote a dedicated playbook for Schengen from Lagos because it's the application Nigerians most frequently give up on.
UK
Expect to spend £115+ on the Standard Visitor fee, submit financials, and wait 3–6 weeks. The UK is one of the most document-heavy applications we help with. Not impossible — just plan 10 weeks ahead minimum.
USA
Interview-based B1/B2 visa, up to 500+ day wait for appointments in Lagos as of late 2026. Many Nigerians travel to the US via a third-country appointment (we've seen successful stories through Ghana and Nairobi).
Canada
A single visa authorises both tourism and family visits. Document checklist is substantial, biometrics are mandatory. Processing times have been 8–12 weeks for Nigerian applicants in 2026.
